Ready to paint without rinsing your brush?
Van Gogh didn't paint one single Sunflowers painting, he painted 12. Some of them were painted in a vase, and some of them were lying on a table. To Vincent, these sunflowers represented gratitude, and he gave some of them to his friends.
Five of these paintings, the ones in vases, were painted with three shades of yellow, and nothing else. These yellow paints were new, and Van Gogh is one of the first painters who embraced them and used them in his work.
In this project, students will use tempera to paint their own sunflowers, layering brush strokes of various types, and using the double and triple loading techniques. They'll love (and be challenged!) by not rinsing their brush!
