Like the columns of Ancient Greece, Ancient Egyptian columns also came with a wide variety of capitals, or the portion at the top with the decorations. Favorites were palm, papyrus, lotus flowers, or other plant life near the Nile.
Although most remaining columns look like they were made of sandstone and little else, the columns in Egypt (and Greece!) were painted in a variety of colors, based on the minerals available to them.
In this project, students will design their own Egyptian column using lines, patterns, and traditional colors.
