I'm your host Julie soul, longtime homeschool mom, shenanigan enthusiast, espresso drinker, and founder and co owner of soul Sparkletts art. I've helped 1000s Add creativity and joy to their homeschool, and I'm ready to help you today. Ready to get started. Let's go. Hello, everyone. And welcome back to the creative homeschool podcasts. Today, I'd like to talk about different types of homeschooling. There's a lot of different types out there, and you might be a veteran homeschool or looking to switch it up. Or you might be considering homeschooling for the first time this fall. Or you might be absolutely new, and you're thinking oh my gosh, am I doing it right? So one thing that you're gonna learn while I'm reading off all these different types, and I'm talking about all of them is there's not one type that is better than the others. This is the most important thing that I can tell you, as I'm going through all of these, do not think you're doing it wrong. There are so many different ways to homeschool and you need to find the one that works for your family. That means the kids and also means for you. Because when you're happy, then everything goes a lot better. So let's talk about the different types. First type is adventure Academy. home schoolers here are focusing on hands on experiences, real life learning, or tapping field trips, exploring nature, visiting museums, traveling to different places to make learning, more adventurous to get kids and you immersed in whatever you're learning. So it's about turning the world into your classroom. Now, field trips don't have to be far away or even a day long experience. They can be visiting a new store and talking about marketing, you can be learning about 300 different types of candy. I know we have a old candy shop in the city here that's really kind of interesting. You can go to a chocolate Museum and try 10 different types of chocolate and see how they're made. It can be really fun. Now one of my favorite field trips is heading to the dune rides here in Michigan. The one that we go to is on privately owned land, you get the thrill ride of the dunes and the wind in your hair. You can see Lake Michigan what I like to refer to as our fake ocean. And you also get to learn about the town they got buried under there and the dune ecosystem. And they do this all while telling jokes that for some reason don't get old. But that is the adventure Academy so you are hands on. Number two, tech wizard. homeschoolers here are harnessing the power of technology in all its forms. So from educational apps, online courses, virtual reality simulations, the possibilities for bringing texture homeschooler are limitless nowadays. You can even be creating a stop motion animation using modeling clay. You could be taking a virtual course with someone or a class on out school. There are so many different ways to utilize tech, YouTube videos, documentaries, but you're using technology at its best. So these are our Tech Wizards. Number three literary voyagers here are homeschoolers who love to dive into the magical world of literature. That means the classics. That means a fantasy, graphic novels, lots of reading aloud, engaging in discussions over the bucks, organizing book clubs, creative writing, workshops, and projects writing poetry. Some of you may even have heard of something like poetry, tea time, throwing book parties afterwards. That's when you get together with a bunch of people who have read the book and you have a theme. So all about the written word. These are our literary voyagers, number four, artistic fusion. So you are integrating the arts into just about every subject. So art isn't a second choice anymore, or a subject you do on the side. But everything is integrated through art. So painting and sculpting that also means theater and music. So we're talking about music appreciation, and we're talking about seeing a beetle outside and then drawing a beetle, creating an art workbook or an art display. It means putting on a play about a part in history that you've learned. So these are super creative, using the arts in order to synthesize when you Learn something how do you get it to actually stick? These are homeschoolers who are using art as a way to do that. So artistic fusion, number five, community collaborators. So these are homeschoolers who love coops partnering with other homeschool families, sharing resources, planning group activities, heading out on joint field trips, working really hard. These are people who love remaining super social with other homeschooling groups, you're also creating a supportive network of friends. This can be something that is like a co op, where your kids are taking an art class together every week. But it's also about having those playdates where you're meeting other homeschoolers out there. And you're creating that for the kids, but also for you because one thing as homeschool parents is that it is so much easier to do it when you know someone and you can talk about homeschooling. These are our community collaborators. Number six nature's classrooms, these are our homeschool are stepping into the great outdoors. So hiking, nature based learning exploring forests and the ocean observing wildlife. This can be gardening, engaging in hands on science experiments, but doing them outside lots of hands on but in nature, these are not only fostering a love for the environment and for nature, but also for learning. So this is instead of reading about science, this is taking it into the forest and taking a look at these creatures looking for birds and so on. I know my oldest is really into learning about mushrooms lately. So we're doing a lot of nature's classroom hikes where she could look for it. Now it hasn't been raining that much, which sadly, is not very helpful when you're looking for mushrooms. But she found some golden oyster mushrooms the other day, and is able to study those. So nature's classroom. Number seven global explorers. So here's our home schoolers who love homeschooling through a journey around the world without leaving home. Now some people can leave home and do road schooling or world schooling where you're actually going to these locations and experiencing them. For those that can't afford it. There are still ways to do global exploring, there are virtual field trips that you can have around the world. These are exploring different cultures by attending events in your local community, studying world history, geography, and even maybe hosting a cultural exchange student. So this is learning through the nature of we're not alone in our local community that the world is so much bigger, and let's learn about it that way. So these are our global explorers. Okay, the next one curriculum connoisseur.
These are homeschoolers who love a good curriculum, and love curriculums that tell
them what to do. And when. So the easier to follow the better open and go when you just want to open up the page, start reading list a simple supplies. The best thing about having a curriculum like this, for those people who love doing it this way, do you feel accomplished? Do you feel like you know that your kids are getting what they need to be successful. Now, of course, our curriculum kind of sores do like sometimes change it up by throwing it out the window for a new and shiny one. But we won't tell. So these are people who can do everything else, but you love just having that basic curriculum, and you know that the next day, you're gonna do the next thing in this curriculum. So you feel like you're constantly moving forward. And finally, buffet homeschooling, this is where I fit in everyone, I'm kind of a little bit of everything, and I change based on the seasons. And that is one of the most beautiful parts of homeschooling, you can change and do what's best for your family. You are not stuck to one of these. These are just ideas for homeschooling. And all of these are beautiful. Sometimes the curriculum kind of sore is really good for people who are just beginning homeschooling because it makes you feel a little bit more like you're doing something that's more of a traditional school approach. For some people, it feels more comfortable because for a lot of us, that's what we know. And then eventually you start to branch out and you see that when you're doing that art project, that they are learning history and geography and science through that art project and you don't feel the need to do that curriculum part for that day anymore. Or you take a field trip and you realize that they just did a lot of reading practice while they're reading all of these signs at the museum, and you don't feel like you need to have them read two paragraphs about Abraham Lincoln, for example. So there's lots of ways to connect. But go gentle with yourself. Pick one and try it. Think about what would work best for your family. Are you hands on? Are you more comfortable with technology? Do you like coding? Is that the way that you want to learn? Do you need something open and go? And maybe you're with me and you're a buffet? homeschooler so I would personally love it if you would tag us at Seoul Sparkletts art on Instagram, or at let us know on Facebook and let me know what kind of homeschooler you are. I'm curious if I'm alone as a buffet homeschooler out there, or if there's others like me, or if there's another one that really resonated with you care everyone, till next time
