Have you ever seen a child draw something over and over and over?
There's a reason for that. They aren't just drawing it, they're world-building.
When kids are drawing a cat, they're thinking about what it's name is, or its super powers, and they're thinking about the friends that it has.
It's NEVER just a cat.
So when we encourage kids to draw something else, we can inadvertently interrupt that pattern, and not in a good way.
We end up teaching them that having something they love might not be a good thing.
We also teach them that they should hide their artwork.
And sometimes those kids become adults who haven't picked up a paintbrush or colored pencil since 5th grade.
So the next time you see a child drawing the same thing over and over - ask questions. Get curious. This is how we start to build confidence, and artists.
