November 2025 | What to Do with Leftovers and Scraps

Who's ready for some leftovers? Art leftovers, that is!

And what does it have to do with a butterfly?!

My oldest found this sweet monarch butterfly the other day and take a look at that wing - it's broken. It reminded me of all of the times that we've had pieces of scrap paper, broken crayons and oil pastels, and we wonder - what do we do with all of this...STUFF?

It almost seems like we should throw them out, but there's beauty in the broken pieces and the scraps, if we know how to use them.

A couple months have gone by since the start of the year and the art supplies aren't looking so fresh anymore, are they? They're a little battered, the white isn't as white, and there are broken pieces everywhere.

And then there's the paper. Discarded drawings because a line went wrong, pieces of paper that they've cut out and left on the table...

Yep. Welcome to art leftovers season.

I've learned to keep a special box with those pieces of paper, and to love on my wrapper-less broken crayons. Because sometimes, you just want to create, and having broken pieces makes you feel a little less guilty in using them in different ways.

So let's see what we can do with this stuff - and how to use it for some serious stress relief this season.

What do Black History Month and bees have in common?
A few years ago I was all abuzz about this fact that I learned... Honeybees see in color.  Or maybe I've never actually paid attention to what bugs can and can't see (other than those images that make it look like bug eyes see a kaleidoscope).  Charles Henry Turner, the first Black entomologist, was passionate about bugs. His discovery that honey bees see in vibrant color, however, was credit...
The End of 2025 | Going Into 2026 Like a WARRIOR
Fans of the Warriors series by Erin Hunter, and of cats, this art camp is for YOU! Does this cat look like a Warrior to you? My cat Jezzi was in the slammer for 2.5 years before we adopted her, and she's learning to enjoy the finer things in life (like a nice, warm blanket and lap).  But this is my first cat. I'm actually a dog person - but I think I'm now a bit of a cat person too. Being abl...
